Shelbyville is a small town in the county seat of Bedford County. It was laid out in 1810 and united in 1819. The city is a center of the Tennessee Walking Horse industry and is now known for its nickname, "The Walking Horse Capital of the World."

About a little over 50 miles southeast of Nashville, Tennessee, you can find the city. Their community is excellent in both historical culture and humble charm. There's a peaceful, laidback lifestyle with many things to do waiting for you along the Duck River in southern middle Tennessee.

Fish or float the Duck River, bike through the scenic farmland, ride a horse, have fun in the many festivals and events, or relax or take a stroll - all these will guarantee you a fun visit.

Furthermore, they have a state-of-the-art recreation center and youth sports activities. They take pride in being the Home of the Golden Eaglettes, a nationally recognized girl’s high school basketball program with 12 victories state championships. Their team has been named the #1 team in the nation twice and runner-up once.

Moreover, being the Walking Horse Capital of the World, the Grand Champion Tennessee Walking Horse is crowned yearly at their TWH National Celebration. Also, it's known as The Pencil City due to its historical essentialism to pencil manufacturing, though these days, they make more “writing instruments” than pencils.

Tennessee Walking Horse National Celebration

This takes place annually within the 11 days and nights before  Labor Day. It is the biggest show for the Tennessee Walking Horse. The gathering is a festival event where over $650,000 in prizes and awards are given. It began in 1939, and the first winner was Strolling Jim.
